RIP Leonard Nimoy

Leonard Nimoy, who played Spock in Star Trek, died today. He was 83 years old.

Undoubtedly, pop culture would be poorer without him; Spock makes a much better Trek symbol than any captain, and Nimoy’s directorial and writing talent made the later Trek films he worked on some of the most successful of the franchise.

I have yet to see any of Nimoy’s non-Star Trek filmography, and of course never got the chance to see him on stage, but his performance as Spock, the coldly logical embodiment of Reason, is easily my favorite TOS character.

In closing, I express my sympathies for Nimoy’s family and friends, and hope that he is long remembered. The classic Vulcan phrase, “live long and prosper”, comes to mind. I don’t know if he prospered, but he did have a long and prominent life.
